UEFA Euro 2020 knockout phase

The knockout phase of UEFA Euro 2020 will begin on 26 June 2021 with the round of 16 and end on 11 July 2021 with the final at Wembley Stadium in London, England.[1]

Format

In the knockout phase, if a match is level at the end of 90 minutes of normal playing time, extra time is played (two periods of 15 minutes each), where each team is allowed to make a fourth substitution.[2] If still tied after extra time, the match is decided by a penalty shoot-out to determine the winners.[3]

UEFA set out the following schedule for the round of 16:[3]

  • Match 1: Winner Group B vs 3rd Group A/D/E/F
  • Match 2: Winner Group A vs Runner-up Group C
  • Match 3: Winner Group F vs 3rd Group A/B/C
  • Match 4: Runner-up Group D vs Runner-up Group E
  • Match 5: Winner Group E vs 3rd Group A/B/C/D
  • Match 6: Winner Group D vs Runner-up Group F
  • Match 7: Winner Group C vs 3rd Group D/E/F
  • Match 8: Runner-up Group A vs Runner-up Group B

The quarter-final match-ups are:[3]

  • Quarter-final 1: Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2
  • Quarter-final 2: Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4
  • Quarter-final 3: Winner Match 5 v Winner Match 6
  • Quarter-final 4: Winner Match 7 v Winner Match 8

The semi-final match-ups are:[3]

  • Semi-final 1: Winner Quarter-final 1 v Winner Quarter-final 2
  • Semi-final 2: Winner Quarter-final 3 v Winner Quarter-final 4

As with every tournament since UEFA Euro 1984, there is no third place play-off.
