As per the 2001 census, Umayalpuram had a total population of 4697 with 2383 males and 2314 females. The sex ratio was 971. The literacy rate was 76.72.

Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Mridangam Player; Umayalpuram Sivarama sastrigal a famous Upanyasagar.Umayalpuram Sivarama Sastrigal was born to Shri.Ramasamy sastrigal and Smt. Meenakshi ammal in the year 1920 at Umayalpuram. Ramasamy sastrigal was a vidhayi and was recognised by Sri Matam. and they did not have child for a long time. Meenakshmi ammal followed "krithigai vradham" and underwent Padayatra from Umayalpuram to Swamimalai and as a result ,Sivarama sastrigal was born . He studied "meemamsa Sironmani" at Thiruvaiyaru Sanskrit college and became veda grantha vidwan. He went to Delhi at the age of 20 and taught sastra purana, Bhagavath Geetha & srimath ramayana pravachanas to the tamil local people there for 5 years there.He was an ardent devotee of Sri Rama; He got the affection of the people because of his wisdom in upanyasams. He was felicitated by Sringeri Shankaracharya many times during 1950s for his devotion, sincerity and pandithyam . Kanchi Shakaracharya once asked sivarama sastrigal to deliver speech appropriate to that day. Sastrigal delivered upansyasam on Bheeshma MOksham for 2 hours and paramacharya blessed him with asta lakshmi adorned gold thoda; Former Indian presidents Shri Radhakrishnan and Shri Venkatraman were likened by his upanyasams. Sengalipuram ananda rama dikshithar called him as "Pravachana Narasimham". He was awardedf weith Valmiki Bhavagya, Meemasa Sironmani, Vedantha vidwan, pravachana vasaspathi, Sarobanyasa chadura, pravachana kalanidhi,pravachana dureena, Bhagavatha sudharathna, Pradhyaksha sukacharya . When he was living in Melattur varadaraja perumal street , he was instigated by perumal in the dream and written Achyutha varadaraja Sadakam .

Umayalpuram is a plain in Cauvery delta and several birds that are endemic to Indian subcontinent are found here. Ashy Prinia, Tawny flanked prinia, red-vented Bulbul, white browed Bulbul, oriental Magpie Robin, Bushchat, munia, mynah etc., are found here.
