Valašské Meziříčí (Czech pronunciation: [ˈvalaʃskɛː ˈmɛzɪr̝iːtʃiː]; German: Wallachisch Meseritsch), colloquially Valmez, is a town in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic. It has around 22,000 inhabitants. The centre of the town is historically significant and since 1992 is protected by law as urban monument zone.[2]

The Vsetínská Bečva and Rožnovská Bečva rivers join in the town to form the Bečva River.

Etymology

The name comes from "mezi-říčí" (being between rivers); the centre is in the wedge of the confluencing Rožnovská Bečva and Vsetínská Bečva rivers. The adjective "Valašské" specifies that this town is located in Moravian Wallachia.

History

The first mention of Valašské Meziříčí is from 1297. With the town status is first mentioned in 1377.[2]
