Valentina Leskaj

Valentina Leskaj (born 1 November 1948) is an Albanian politician and political economist who has been a member of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania for the Socialist Party[1] from 2002 until 2017, when she decided to resign and leave politics.[2]

From 2015 – 2017 she was elected as vice deputy parliamentary speaker of the Albanian Parliament.[3]    

On 24 July 2017, she took the office as acting head of the parliament[4] after Ilir Meta was elected President of the Republic.

Before her election as vice deputy parliamentary speaker, Leskaj held a number of other positions.

She was appointed as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Albania in 2002, a position that she held until 2004.[5]

In 2003 she was elected Chairwomen of the Parliamentary Commission for Labour and Social Affairs and served until 2004

2003 -2009  Leskaj was elected Chairwoman of the Albanian Parliament delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe during the opening session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe held in Strasbourg.[6]

In 2004 she was appointed Chairwomen of the Parliamentary Commission for EU Integration, a position that she held until 2005

In 2005 Leskaj was appointed Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Commission for Education and Media until 2013 [7]

2006 – 2009 Chairwoman of the CEI Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture

Leskaj was appointed from the Albanian Parliamentary Assembly Leader of the Albanian parliamentary group for Socialist Party during the period of 2007 – 2009 [8]

During the period of 2014 – 2017 she was elected Member of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe and Political Affairs Committee[9]

Valentina Leskaj was appointed Vice President of Socialist Group in Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe in 2014 and held the position until 2017[10]

From 2013 to 2017, she held the position of President of the parliamentary Albania-Israel Friendship Group [11]

On 25 June 2015 Valentina Leskaj, was elected Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for Moldova.[12] She was nominated by the Socialist Group and voted with the support of all political groups at the Monitoring Committee meeting held in Strasbourg and run this post until 2017

Also, during 2013 – 2017 Valentina Leskaj was appointed head of the Albanian Parliamentary Delegation in Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe[13]

She was elected in 2014 Vice President of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe and held the position until 2016[14]

Lately, on September 14, 2020 Valentina Leskaj joined the Combat Anti-Semitism Movement (CAM) Advisory Board,[15] thus becoming the first Muslim member of the board

Earlier career

Valentina Leskaj graduated on Political Economy at the University of Tirana, Economic Faculty[16] has been a lecturer of this faculty from the year 1979 until 1987.

In 1983 until 1988 she has been appointed Chief editor of the magazine “Shqiptarja e Re” , a magazine created by The Organ of the Women's Union of Albania during socialism period.

Since 1994, Valentina Leskaj was Cofounder and Vice President of the UNESCO Center for Women and Peace in the Balkans Countries and of Inter-Balkan Women’s Co-operation Societies.[17]

Leskaj has been founder of the Albanian Center for Population and Developmen[18] t (ACPD) , a non for profit organization established in 1995 which works for improvement of policies, legislation, the right of information and services for issues concerning population and development, and health issues including reproductive health. She has been serving in the post of executive director until 2002.

During the years 2003 – 2014, she was president of the  Albanian Center for Population and Development.

From 1997 – 2002 she has been appointed President of Albanian NGOs Forum, an umbrella organization with wide membership.
