Vehicle registration plates of Liechtenstein

Vehicle registration plates of the Principality of Liechtenstein are composed of the letters FL followed by a small version of the coat of arms of Liechtenstein and up to five digits written in white colour on a black background using the same type of font as Swiss car number plates. The letters FL stand for Fürstentum Liechtenstein. This system was introduced in 1920.

The size of the front plates is 30 cm × 8 cm. The rear plates are either 30 cm × 16 cm or 50 cm × 11 cm in size. Liechtenstein licence plates are assigned to the holder, not to the vehicle. When the vehicle is changed, the same plates are fitted to the new vehicle. If the holder no longer registers a new vehicle, the plates must be returned to the issuing authority in Vaduz.

The Principality of Liechtenstein is the last European country to issue black standard plates. In other countries, black licence plates are only issued for specific vehicle groups (e.g. historical or army vehicles) or optionally alongside white and yellow licence plates (Guernsey, Alderney).

Due to the small size of the country (about 38,900 inhabitants), only about 2,000 vehicles are newly registered each year.[1] On June 30, 2020, a total of 36,215 motor vehicles, 4,782 motorbikes and 4,144 trailers had been registered in Liechtenstein.[2]

As of October 2020, the issued numbers on standard series plates were:

Motorbikes : FL 21 – FL 5540
Trailers : FL 301 – FL 1999
Motor vehicles : FL 2000 – FL 39500
Trailers : FL 65100 – FL 67900
