Vienna Waltzes
Vienna Waltzes (at one time called Wiener Walzer) is a ballet made by New York City Ballet co-founder and founding choreographer George Balanchine to music by Johann Strauss, Jr., Franz Lehár, and Richard Strauss:
- "Tales from the Vienna Woods", Op. 325 (J. Strauss II, 1868)
- "Voices of Spring", Op. 410 (J. Strauss II, 1885)
- "Explosion Polka", Op. 43 (J. Strauss II, 1848)
- "Gold and Silver Waltz" (Lehár, 1905)[1]
- Der Rosenkavalier, first sequence of waltzes (R. Strauss, arranged 1944)
The premiere took place on 23 June 1977 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, with mise-en-scène by Rouben Ter-Arutunian and lighting by Ronald Bates. The costumes by Karinska were the last she designed for the New York City Ballet; Robert Irving conducted. Vienna Waltzes was seen in preview at City Ballet's gala on 15 June, at which time Jean-Pierre Bonnefous danced the role later assumed by Jorge Donn.
