History

The FM allocation for Catlettsburg, KY at 92.7 MHz originally signed on with the call letters of WCAK in January 1972.[1] Other call signs included the following:

  • WKQI, January 1, 1986
  • WCMI-FM, November 29, 1988
  • WRVC-FM, May 16, 1995 Sunny 92.7[2]

On March 3, 2009, the station retrobranded to 92.7 The Planet WCMI-FM. The station is now 92.7 & 98.5 The Planet WCMI-FM. It is the Tri-State's home for Kentucky Wildcats Basketball. Also the Tri-State's ONLY leader for new rock![3] WCMI-FM was the original call sign for the Ashland, KY FM allocation at 93.7 MHz (now WDGG). That facility had also previously used WRVC-FM in addition to WAMX.[4]

It was NOT affiliated with WAMX-FM, which was owned and operated by another former local radio personality, Dick Martin. There is NO inference or claim in my piece, "Recollections of John Davidson", that WCAK was the original sign on for WAMX-FM. {edit per John Davidson, 08/24/14}, History of WCMI, Ashland, KY, 2008
