Weighting includes material with special guest Charles Gayle on saxophone, which was unable to be released earlier due to contractual restrictions. Critic Greg Prato of Allmusic described the songs with Gayle as probably the album's highlights and the only occasion when Rollins Band, who had earlier flirted with jazz and improvisation, ultimately "went for it" and played overt jazz with a major musician of the genre.
