Wong Siew Ki

Wong Siew Ki (王诗棋; pinyin: Wáng shī qí; born 17 May 1986), is a Malaysian politician from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.[1] She is also the incumbent Selangor State Legislative Assemblywoman for the Balakong state seat since 2018.She is the Chief for DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Selangor and Assistant Publicity Secretary for DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Malaysia.

Personal life

Wong was born on 17 May 1986, and started growing up in Ipoh, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Perak.

Wong is the second daughter for Wong Fook Keong and Chin Kooi Seng[2]

Education

Wong graduated in 2009 from Universiti Putra Malaysia with a Bachelor of Arts (Foreign Language) major in Mandarin Literature.[3] As of 2018, she was pursuing a Master of Arts (Chinese Literature).[4]

She obtained her secondary and primary school education from S.J.K(C) Poi Lam Ipoh, S.M.K Poi Lam Ipoh and S.M.K Methodist (ACS) Ipoh respectively.

Early career

Before becoming a politician, Wong was a blogger writing on politics and current issues. She also made various documentaries.[4]

Wong was the president of University Putra Malaysia’s Chinese Society during her university life in 2008. She also actively involved in student movements. After graduating, she wrote articles about her opinion towards social movements via her blog using her pen name “Tian Fei”. In 2012, she became the director and producer of the documentary about Teoh Beng Hock’s injustice case named “Zhui Luo/ The fallen” besides working full-time in political field (which is quite different compared to other activists/ politicians). In the past few years (in the year of 2013, 2014 and 2016), documentary named “Inheritance” (heritage preservation), “migration” (anti-lynas movement ) and “Instigation” (Sedition Act).

In 2013, she founded Dapur Jalanan Kuala Lumpur with some friends in order to help those needy in urban and encourage youngsters to actively involved in social caring activities. Within the same year (in line with the GE-13), she commenced her political life by becoming the political secretary of Selangor's executive committee member Ean Yong Hian Wah.

Political career

In 2013, current Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah invited Wong to be his political secretary. She joined Democratic Action Party in year 2014.Wong was sworn in as a councillor at Subang Jaya Municipal Council in 2016.[4] During this period, she activity promoted recycling activity.[5] She was nominated as a candidate for the Balakong constituency after assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chee passed away in a car accident on 20 July 2018.[6][7]

On 19 July 2018, due to the passing away of Eddie Ng Tien Chee in car accident, DAP announced on 14 August that she would become the candidate of by-election when she was the president of DAPSY Serdang. On 8 September, she won the sit by 18,533 votes against MCA candidate's, Tan Chee Teong.

In November 2018, she led the team including Jamaliah's team to compete and manage to win in DAPSY Selangor election. She became the president of DAPSY Selangor.

2018 Balakong By-Election

A by-election was held on 8 September 2018 for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly seat of Balakong.[8] The seat became vacant after the death of the incumbent assemblyman, Eddie Ng Tien Chee on 20 July 2018 in a traffic accident on the Cheras–Kajang Expressway.[9] Eddie Ng was a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the state ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. This was the second casual vacancy in the Assembly since the May 2018 general election after Sungai Kandis, which held a by-election in August 2018. The by-election will be held on the same day as the Seri Setia by-election.[10] In the last 2018 general election, Ng defeated Barisan Nasional (BN)'s Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) candidate, Lim Chin Wah and Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali of Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), with a vote majority of 35,538.

The nomination day was on 18 August 2018.[8] The by-election set for a straight fight between PH's DAP and BN's MCA. While PAS had decided not to contest to make way for the BN candidate, just liked in the case of the Sungai Kandis by-election a month earlier.[11]

Pakatan Harapan retained the seat with a larger share of vote.
