Wrong Turn (2021 film)

Wrong Turn[4] (also known internationally as Wrong Turn 7: The Foundation)[5] is a 2021 horror film directed by Mike P. Nelson and written by Alan McElroy. The film is a reboot and the seventh installment of the Wrong Turn film series. The film stars Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Bill Sage and Matthew Modine. It is an international co-production between the United States, Germany and Canada.

Wrong Turn was theatrically released for one day on January 26, 2021, by Saban Films. The film received generally mixed reviews from critics, who criticized its uneven writing, confusing narrative, and underdeveloped characters, but some praised its production values and some improvements over previous entries in the franchise.

Premise

A team of friends are hiking the Appalachian Trail, only to be hunted by the "Foundation", a self-sufficient community of people who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years and have become extremely hostile to outsiders.[6]

Production

In October 2018, a reboot of the Wrong Turn film series was announced.[7] The film will be directed by Mike P. Nelson and written by Alan B. McElroy, writer of the original Wrong Turn in 2003. Charlotte Vega will star in the film.[8]

Principal photography began on September 9, 2019 in Ohio[9][10][6] and wrapped on November 2.[11]

Release

Wrong Turn was originally scheduled to release in 2020. However, the film was pushed to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12] On December 16, 2020, it was announced that the film would premiere in American theaters for one night only on January 26, 2021.[2]

Reception

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 56% approval rating based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 5.9/10.[13]

Nick Allen of RogerEbert.com gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, writing that "McElroy and Nelson evolve Wrong Turn into a bizarre, winding odyssey, albeit with a lot more on its mind than just a cool kill."[14]
