Puneeth Rajkumar, was reported to sign his next film with Santhosh Ananddram, after completing the production works of his film Natasaarvabhowma (2019).[17] The film marks the second collaboration of Rajkumar and Ananddram after Raajakumara (2017), and Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films, was reported to produce the film after working on the duo's previous flick.[18] On 10 October 2018, the makers announced that the film's title will be launched by one of his lucky fan,[19][20] and also slated that the team might consider using a title from yesteryear actor Rajkumar’s 200-odd films, but might contain a new element.[21] On 23 October 2018, Puneeth Raajkumar took to Instagram, to announce that the entire Raajakumara team (which consists of Puneeth Rajkumar, Ananddram, music composer V. Harikrishna and Hombale Films), will be joining this project.[22] At an event to launch the film's title was held at the Cauvery Theatre in Bangalore by one of his fan on 1 November 2018 (Kannada Rajyotsava), where the title was revealed to be Yuvarathnaa.[23] According to reports, Puneeth was reported to play a college student in the film,[24][25] for which he reduced weight to get a lean role.[26][27][28]

Casting

On 1 December 2018, the team hosted auditions for the budding actors and actresses to feature in the film.[29] The makers reported that around 200 new talents were auditioned and shortlisted.[26] Initially, Tamannaah was set to play the female lead,[30] which would have been her full-fledged Kannada debut after appearing in item numbers in Jaguar (2016) and K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2019),[31][32] however it was later reported that Tamil actress Sayyeshaa was confirmed for the role.[33][34] Dhananjay and Vasishta N. Simha were roped in for the film,[9][10] appearing in negative roles.[35] Arun Gowda, was reported to be cast in the film.[36] Veteran Tamil actress Radhika Sarathkumar, joined the cast on March 2019, marking her comeback in Kannada film industry after 32 years.[37] Her last appearance in a Kannada film was in the 1987 film Sathyam Shivam Sundaram.[12] Boman Irani was reported to play a pivotal role in the film, making his debut in Kannada.[38]

Prominent filmmaker Bhagavan made his acting debut through this film,[39] alongside with bodybuilder Mamatha Sanathkumar.[40][41] Triveni Rao, confirmed her presence in the film on June 2019.[42] On July 2019, Prakash Raj and Diganth joined the film's cast.[43] Diganth's role was revealed to be a deputy commissioner in the film.[44] The very same month, Sonu Gowda, also took her part in the film.[45] On 9 December 2019, Pavan, son of Kannada filmmaker Narayan, joined the sets of the film.[46]

Composer V. Harikrishna, opted out of the project citing schedule conflicts and was replaced by S. Thaman as the music director.[47] Dhilip Subbarayan, who choreographed for the action sequences in the Prabhas-starrer Saaho (2019) was roped in as the action director.[48]

Filming

The film had a formal launch with the presence of its cast and crew on 12 December 2018.[49] The principal photography of the film began on 14 February 2019,[50] in Bangalore and wrapped up within six days.[51] The film's second schedule was kickstarted in the outskirts of Maharaja college in Mysore in late February.[36] The third schedule of the film kickstarted on 22 March.[52] During the intermediate schedule on 8 April 2019, Puneeth's elder brother Raghavendra Rajkumar made a visit to the sets.[53] After a long break, the team resumed the fifth schedule of shoot in Darwad on June 2019.[54]

It was reported that the team may kickstart the song shoot within November 2019.[55] On 1 February 2020, Santhosh Ananddram tweeted about the processings of the song shoot choreographed by Jani Master.[56][57] In late February, the sources have reported to shoot two songs at Europe, with the team heading on 24 February 2020, later to 2 March 2020, where the shoot may go on for four days.[58][59] Due to the coronavirus scare, the makers decided to shoot the songs at Austria and Slovenia.[60] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the makers call off shooting schedules in abroad,[61] and the film's shoot was further affected due to the pandemic.

On 26 September 2020, Puneeth Rajkumar and his team resumed the final schedule for two songs, which were planned to shoot abroad, but later resumed in India.[62] On 12 October 2020, the team announced that they have wrapped the shoot of the film.[63]

The film's music is composed by S. Thaman, who worked with Puneeth Rajkumar in Power (2014) and Chakravyuha (2016).[64] Yuvarathnaa marks Thaman's first collaboration with Santhosh Ananddram, replacing his regular collaborator V. Harikrishna for his films Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014) and Raajakumara (2017).[65]

In late May 2020, Santhosh released a still from the song "Power Of Youth" through his Twitter account, which created curiosity among the fans.[66] The song was in the making before March 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After fans demanded about the first single, Thaman asked his fans to co-operate since he couldn't complete the progress of the song, due to the lockdown imposed in Chennai, where his studio being located, and also stated that the musicians and singers are facing problems, which may delay in music composition.[67] At a special poster released on the occasion of Varamahalakshmi Vrata, 31 July 2020, the poster features few lines from the song "Power Of Youth".[68] On late September 2020, the makers released a still featuring Puneeth Rajkumar, singing a song which was tentatively titled as "Oorigobba Raja", which is expected to be included in the film's soundtrack.[69]

While there were reports claiming that the film will be released simultaneously in Kannada and Telugu, the makers announced that the song "Power Of Youth" will release simultaneously in two languages, on 29 November 2020.[70] Nakash Aziz sung for both the versions; whereas the Telugu version had lyrics written by Ramajogayya Sastry and Kannada version had lyrics written by the film's director Santhosh Ananddram.[71] Deciding not to tie up with any music labels, the makers planned to release the lyrical version of the song directly through the YouTube channel of its production house on the same day.[72]

The second single track titled "Neenaade Naa" in Kannada (written by Ghouse Peer) and "Aarambame" in Telugu (written by Ramajogayya Sastry), was released on 25 December 2020, coinciding with Christmas.[73] Rakshit Shetty and Vijay Deverakonda released the songs in their respective versions, which featured vocals by Armaan Malik and Shreya Ghoshal respectively.[74]

Yuvarathnaa was originally slated to release on the eve of Dusshera occasion, falling on 7 October 2019.[75] However, the delay in the post-production works of the film made the makers postpone its release to December 2019, later to January 2020.[76] On late December, the makers announced that the film will release on 3 April 2020.[77] However in late February 2020, the makers announced that the film will be rescheduled for a release on 8 May 2020,[78] which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India.[79]
