Zimbabwean Lives Matter

Zimbabwean Lives Matter is a Zimbabwean protest movement modeled after the American Black Lives Matter campaign. The protest movement is directed towards the Zimbabwean government of incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa who took over through a 2017 bloodless coup from Robert Mugabe.

Several celebrities have at least shown some interest in the protest movement with notable non-Zimbabwean celebrities like Former Botswana President Ian Khama,[1] Ice Cube, AKA and Lecrae and actresses Thandie Newton and Pearl Thusi joining in.[2] Notable Zimbabwean celebrities also joined in including the likes of Tsitsi Dangarembga, retired South African Rugby icon of Zimbabwean origin Tendai 'The beast' Mtawarira and Thomas Mapfumo were some of the Zimbabweans who also joined the movement.[3] The protest movement has managed to garner as much as more than 700 000 tweets [4] a sign to how popular the movement has grown since its inception on the 31 July 2020.

Like the Black Lives Matter protest movement, the Zimbabwean Lives Matter protest movement does not have a central organiser as most of the activists have been protesting through their microblogging Twitter accounts. A repository[5] of Zimbabwean Lives Matter materials has been created.
