Sacramento State competed in the Northern California Athletic Conference (NCAC). Prior to 1983, the conference had been known as the Far Western Conference (FWC). The Hornets were led by sixth-year head coach Bob Mattos. They played home games at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California. The team finished the season with a record of five wins, five losses and one tie (5–5–1, 4–1–1 NCAC). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 258–245 for the season.
