1987–88 Second League participation

Mersin İdmanyurdu took place in 1987–88 Second League season. Starting from this season three points for a win rule is adopted. League was played by 52 teams in three groups one with 18 teams and two with 17. Ten teams had been promoted from lower league, whereas two had been relegated from upper league. Season was started on 16 August 1987 and ended on 29 May 1988. Top teams in each group promoted to 1988–89 First League, whereas bottom three teams in each group were relegated to 1988–89 Third League at the end of the season.[1]

Mersin İdmanyurdu took place in 1987–88 Second League season in Group B and finished 11th with 11 wins and 42 goals.

1987–88 Turkish Cup participation

1987–88 Turkish Cup was played for the 26th season as Federasyon Kupası by 68 teams. Among the teams three groups of Second League, teams through 2nd to 6th in previous year, in addition to those relegated from upper league and those promoted from lower league were qualified to play in the Cup. Mersin İdmanyurdu did not participate in 1987–88 Turkish Cup, because they had finished previous season at 11th place in Second League Red Group. Sakaryaspor won the Cup for the first time and was qualified for 1988–89 European Cup Winners' Cup.[5]
