In the men's race, Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele won in a time of 2:01:41 hours, which fell short of the world record time set by Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin the previous year by just two seconds. His second placed countryman Birhanu Legese moved up to third place in the all-time lists with 2:02:48 hours and a third Ethiopian, Sisay Lemma, made it a sweep of the podium with 2:03:36 hours for third. The Austrian Peter Herzog was twelfth with a time of 2:10:57 hours – the best among Europeans.[1] The women's elite race also featured an Ethiopian duel, which saw Ashete Bekere win in 2:20:14 over Mare Dibaba (2:20:21 hours). The Kenyan Selly Chepyego Kaptich was third in 2:21:06, preventing four-placer Helen Tola from sweeping the top three for Ethiopia.
