  • 1 January – Cinema halls island-wide were reopened under strict health guidelines.[1]
  • 8 January
    • State Minister of Batik, Handloom and Local Apparel Products Dayasiri Jayasekara has tested positive for COVID-19.[2]
    • The Fall Army Worm, locally dubbed the Sena caterpillar, that has threatened the existence of cultivations in the country has spread across eight provinces which destroyed corn, pumpkin, bean and radish cultivations.[3]
  • 10 January
    • Cabinet Minister Rauff Hakeem has tested positive for the coronavirus.[4]
    • A disease is spreading among cattle across several villages in the Rambawa Divisional Secretariat.[5]
  • 11 January
    • Schools in all areas, except the ones in the Western province and isolated areas were opened with strict health guidelines.[6]
    • Cabinet Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has tested positive for the coronavirus.[7]
  • 12 January – MP Ranjan Ramanayake was sentenced to 04 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court for committing contempt of court.[8]
  • 14 January – South Asia’s largest tyre factory Ferentino Tyre company was declared open in Horana by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.[9]
  • 18 January – State Minister of Primary Education and Education Services Piyal Nishantha has tested positive for COVID-19.[10]
  • 21 January – Two Sri Lankan cricketers Binura Fernando and Chamika Karunaratne have tested positive for Covid-19.[11]
  • 23 January
    • Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has tested positive for COVID-19.[12]
    • 17-year-old Shukra Munawwar from Katugoda, Galle made history when she won the Rs. 2 Million prize on Sirasa TV’s Lakshapathi program.[13]
  • 25 January
  • 27 January – The State Minister of Coconut, Kithul and Palmyrah Cultivation Promotion and Related Industrial Product Manufacturing & Export Diversification Arundika Fernando has tested positive for the COVID-19.[16]
  • 28 January
    • The first consignment of the Indian government-gifted Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was officially handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa by High Commissioner of India Dr. Gopal Baglay at the Colombo airport.[17]
    • According to Australian Lowy Institute statistics, Sri Lanka has been ranked 10th in the list of countries that handled the coronavirus pandemic more effectively in the world.[18]
  • 29 January
    • The island-wide vaccination of the Indian government-gifted ‘AstraZeneca Covishield’ vaccine began.[19]
    • Popular actor Bimal Jayakody tested COVID-19 positive.[20]
  • 30 January – Total number of COVID-19 death toll in Sri Lanka reached 300 with eight more deaths.[21]

February
  • 2 February
    • Dr. Gayan Danthanarayana attached to the Ragama Teaching Hospital passed away after developing COVID-19 complications. He is the first Sri Lankan doctor actively engaged in COVID-19 treatments to fall victim to COVID-19.[22]
    • Tamil Nadu Q branch sleuths arrested a notorious Sri Lankan drug lord Sinnaiya Gunasekaram aka Kimbula Ela Guna, who had links with LTTE, from Chennai airport.[23]
    • Former Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara has tested positive for COVID-19.[24]
    • Governor of the Southern Province Dr. Willy Gamage tested positive for COVID-19.[25]
  • 2 February – Sri Lanka cricket head coach Mickey Arthur and international cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne have tested positive for COVID-19.[26]
