History

The concept of an Asian women's club competition was recommended in 2018.[2] This translated into the first edition, which was also known as the 2019 FIFA–AFC Pilot Women's Club Championship. This was held as a round-robin in November 2019, with four teams taking part: the domestic league champions of Associations from Australia, China, Japan and South Korea.[3]

A second edition of the FIFA–AFC Pilot Women's Club Championship, with a maximum of six invited clubs, was initially scheduled for 9–14 November 2020,[4] but along with many sporting events, plans were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and no tournament was held in 2020.

The proposal for expanding the tournament towards being an AFC Women's Champions League, as the female counterpart of the AFC Champions League, envisaged that there would be eight invited clubs in 2021 and 2022, a minimum of 12 clubs, open to all member associations, in 2023 and 2024, and consolidated to 16 teams by 2025, where an AFC Women's Club Competition ranking would also be devised.[5]
