Builders details

Class 2700 locos are manufactured by ABB Henschel and Adtranz of Germany under the license of EMD.[6] First 9 locos were made by Henschel while the rest 12 by Adtranz. These 21 locos came to Bangladesh in 2 phases:

  • 1994 = 2701 - 2709
  • 2004 = 2710 - 2721

Technical details

They are 1,500 hp locos. Their model is JT18U6. Their wheel arrangement is A1A-A1A. The prime mover is 8-cylinder EMD 8-645E3C. They have much similar specifications to Class 2600 and Class 2900 locos.

Classification and numbering

The class name or specification for class 2700 locos is "MEL-15". Here, M = Meter-gauge, E = Diesel-electric, L = Henschel and 15 = 15 * 100 = 1500 hp. They are numbered from 2701 to 2721.

Usage

Class 2700 locos are used in both passenger and freight trains. Among the passenger trains, these locos are used mainly on mail/express trains and on some inter-city trains. Previously it was used on some prominent inter-city trains like Subarna Express and Parabat Express but due to the introduction of 2900 class locos, they are not used on these trains anymore.
