Belarus–Turkmenistan relations

Belarus–Turkmenistan relations refers to the bilateral relationship between Belarus and Turkmenistan. Belarus has an embassy in Ashgabat.[1] Turkmenistan has an embassy in Minsk. Both countries are full members of the UN, and the OSCE. Belarus is a full member and Turkmenistan is associated with the CIS. Currently, the ambassador of Turkmenistan to Belarus is Murad Yazberdyev.[2] The Belarussian Ambassador to Turkmenistan is Oleg Tabanyuhov.[3]

History

Diplomatic relations were established 21 January 1993.

Turkmenistan's embassy was opened in October 1995 in Minsk, the first ambassador was Ilya Veljanov. The embassy of the Republic of Belarus to Turkmenistan opened in 2002.

Representatives of both states signed more than 31 interstate, intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements governing bilateral cooperation in various fields.

It supports communication in the political sphere, including at the highest levels. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited Turkmenistan four times (May 2002 – held the first official visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus to Turkmenistan, in June 2009 – the second official visit,[4] in April 2011 – the third official visit,[5] November 2013 – the fourth official visit.[6])

In January 2010 the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited Belarus.[7]

There are ongoing contacts between the foreign ministries of the two countries, cooperation in international organizations.

Trade and economic cooperation

Trade turnover between the two countries in 2013 exceeded $300 million.[8]

Belarus exports to Turkmenistan engineering products: traffic, construction and agricultural machinery, municipal and urban passenger transport, tractors, trucks, as well as bicycles, trucks, pharmaceuticals, chemical fibers, wood products, food products.[9]

Belgorkhimprom builds Garlyk Mining Plant[10] for the production of potash capacity of 1.4 million tons per year in the Lebap District Turkmenistan. The total contract value is $1 billion.[11]

In Minsk exists a Turkmen-Belarusian Trading House,[12] and respectively in Ashgabat is a Belarusian-Turkmen Trade House.[13]

Cultural cooperation

Both countries held joint exhibitions and other events. Additionally, there are 7,400 Turkmen students studying at universities in Belarus.[14]
