Format

Competition

The 16 clubs in the Campeonato Gaúcho are divided into two groups for the season from January to April. Each club contests twice to achieve the calculations that earns the team the right to advance in the competition for the title. Each team contests a team from the other group, then against a team in its own group. A win earns the team three points and a draw earns the team one point. A loss earns zero points. Each team is ranked by a series of calculations based on: total points earned, the number of wins, goal difference and goals scored. The top four ranking teams from each group qualify for the [[play-off|s quarter-finals that contest in a particular format. In a single game, the top ranked teams of each group contests the bottom ranked teams of the other group, with the home advantage given to the better ranked team. The semi-finals follow in a single game contest. The finals are played by two games. The three lowest ranked teams are relegated to the Série A2.

Qualification for competitions

The best placed of league also qualify for the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D, excluding the teams having already qualified for the Série A, Série B or Série C. The best three teams in the Campeonato Gaúcho (champions, runner-up and the third most points in overall table), not qualified to Copa Libertadores de América, will qualify for Copa do Brasil of the following season.
