Dave A. Chokshi

Dave A. Chokshi is an American physician and public health official serving as Health Commissioner of New York City.[1] Chokshi previously served as the chief population health officer for NYC Health + Hospitals in Queens.

Early life and education

Chokshi was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[2] He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University, where he double-majored in chemistry and public policy studies.[3] As a Rhodes Scholar, Chokshi earned a Master of Science degree in global public health from the University of Oxford. He earned a medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and completed a clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School.[4]

Career

Chokshi previously served in the Louisiana Department of Health during Hurricane Katrina. He was a White House Fellow during the Obama administration and served as principal health advisor to the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.[5] Chokshi is a primary care internist at Bellevue Hospital and an associate professor of population health and medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.[6]

In August 2020, Chokshi was selected to serve as Health Commissioner of New York City after the previous commissioner, Oxiris Barbot, resigned amid disagreements with Mayor Bill de Blasio over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8]

Personal life

Chokshi lives in Jackson Heights, Queens with his wife and daughter.[9] Chokshi's wife is a public school teacher.[10]

In February 2021, Chokshi tested positive for COVID-19.[11]
