The Departure Tour was a concert tour by the American rock band Journey. The tour was in support of their 1980 album Departure which was their first top 10 album on the Billboard 200 that peaked at No.8 and like their previous two albums, Infinity and Evolution. The tour kicked off on March 26, 1980, in San Francisco and concluded in October.[1]

Journey concert chronology

This was the last Journey tour to feature founding member of the band Gregg Rolie, who left the band at the conclusion of the tour to start a family and undertake various solo projects.[2]

Background

The band would head out to perform in Europe and Japan. Steve Perry recalled when they were heading to perform in those places, stating that it was a lot of hard work being on the road as much as the band, and that it can make one "very crazy".[3]

The melodic rock band The Babys toured as a support act for Journey on this tour for certain dates in North America. Ricky Phillips, who was the bass player for The Babys at the time, remembered opening for Journey on the tour:

Well, I thought they were amazing and we got on well with them. On the two bands' first flight together, Steve Perry told me I reminded him of his old bass player... they were amazing to watch. I've never watched another band as much. They were tough on us though. They barely gave us enough room to do our show each night... which turned out good actually, because it pushed us right to the front of the stage, and we rocked our asses off. They gave us about half the sound system at first but started adding as they grew to like us. It was always unsettling opening to empty seats but that made us rock hard from the start. We would sell records in every city we played so the pairing was great for us.[4]

Bill Paige, who had attended the band's concert in Chicago, wrote in a positive review of the performance on Billboard:

Journey, especially the energy-bound Perry, delivers 17 crafted yet still exciting songs, leaving no stone in its relatively short career unturned. Smiles, rather than complaints, punctuate the remarks of exiting fans.[4]
