East Akim Municipal District

East Akim Municipal District is a former district in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as East Akim District. Later, part of the district would be split off to become Atiwa District in 2004. [1] It was upgraded to municipal district assembly status by the NPP Kufuor government in February 2008. However on 1 June 2018, it was split out into two new districts: Abuakwa North Municipal District (capital: Kukurantumi) and Abuakwa South Municipal District (capital: Kibi). The municipality was located in the central part of Eastern Region and had Kibi as its capital town.
