East India Company (disambiguation)
The East India Company, also known as the English East India Company, the British East India Company, and the Honourable East India Company, was an English and later British trading company that acted as a sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown.
Company rule in India began in 1757 when the East India Company won the Battle of Plassey and ended after the Indian rebellion of 1857 as a consequence of the Government of India Act 1858.
The term may also refer to the Dutch East India Company, which had an analogous function in the Dutch Republic and later the Netherlands, ruling what would become Indonesia as the Dutch East Indies.
