Introduction

Visakhapatnam has dragged attention of investors not only in the country but also investors from abroad. Visakhapatnam is most commonly known as the Steel City of Andhra Pradesh and provides one of the best production facilities in the country. The ease of doing business, government policies and availability of raw material and labor has made it the first choice among investors. There are Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and industrial corridors, Industrial Park, located in heart of the city. These Industrial Zones provide suitable environment for the growth of business. In Visakhapatnam between the years 2006 - 2013 the investments jumped to Rs.30,000 crores, which was really appreciable

While Primary sector, Agriculture contributes only 10% of City's GDP, the Manufacturing sector contributes 75% in the GDDP, followed by Construction giving 17.90% and Electricity 4.89%. Gross value added by industry sector is 28663 INR Crores and Service sector has been contributing highest in term of revenue, which is boon to Visakhapatnam. Rushikonda IT Park Hill area is being developed as hub for the IT and ITeS, with special economic zone and incubation center. IT/ITES, fin-tech, health and tourism sectors are also growing with pace and have great potential for growth. Agriculture

Agriculture is the main stray of nearly 70% of the households. Though Visakhapatnam city is industrially developing, the rural areas continued to be backward. Rice is a staple food of the people and Paddy is therefore the principal food crop of the district followed by Ragi, Bajra and Jowar and Cash Crops such as Sugarcane, Groundnut, Sesame, Niger and Chilies are important. Since there is no Major Irrigation system, only about 36% of the cropped area is irrigated under the Ayacut of the Medium Irrigation system and Minor Irrigation Tanks. The rest of the cultivated area is covered under dry crops depending upon the vagaries of the monsoon. The productivity of the crops are low.

Animal Husbandry and Dairy Industries

Animal Husbandry is an important allied economic activity to Agriculture. Next to draught Animals which are main source of energy for Agriculture, Milch Animals, Sheep and Goat are important for income generation of the rural households. A sizable number of households earn subsidiary income by selling milk to Visakha Dairy and in Local markets. The total livestock of the district is 14.48 lakhs of which working animals account for 2.01 lakhs while milk Animals account for 3.28 lakhs. Goats and Sheep’s totaling up to 5.76 lakhs are important for the livelihood of the considerable population as per 2012 census.

Dairy industry is one of the fastest growing one. Visakha Dairy is one of the prides of the district and has grown from Rs.11 crore to 12000 crores during last 40 years and milk products have been exported to countries like Singapore, Malaysia etc. Also There is a Heritage plant here that provides a tough competition in this sector. This sector has a significant potential for further growth similar to that of Amul of Gujarat. Dairy industry needs to focus on high value products and exports
