Fantasy podcast

A Fantasy podcast is a podcast related to the fantasy genre, which usually focuses on the magical, supernatural, mythical, or folkloric. Fantasy podcasts are set in fictional universes or fantasy worlds that are often reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Despite having a fictional setting, fantasy podcasts can contain or reference locations, events, or people from the real world. Characters in these stories often encounter fictional creatures and monsters such as dwarves, elves, goblins, ogres, trolls, giants, unicorns, dragona, and fairies. The creators and intended audience of a fantasy podcast can vary from young children to adults. Fantasy podcasts developed out of radio dramas and role-playing games. Fantasy podcasts have often been adapted into television programs, graphic novels, and comics. Fantasy podcasts are a subgenre of fiction podcasts and are distinguished from science fiction podcasts and horror podcasts by the absence of scientific or macabre themes, respectively, though these subgenres regularly overlap. Fantasy podcasts can also include non-fiction podcasts discussing and reviewing fantasy genre films, books, RPGs, and other media.

History

Like other scripted podcasts, fantasy podcasts developed out of radio dramas.[1] Two of the longest running fantasy podcasts, as of 2021, are Sword and Laser and The Clarkesworld Magazine podcast, which have been regularly releasing episodes since 2007 and 2008 respectively.[2][3] Some fantasy podcasts overlap with other fiction genres; for instance, Sword and Laser,[2] Imaginary Worlds,[4] Tech Witch,[5] and the Clarkesworld Magazine podcast all cross over into science fiction and are regularly labelled as both science fiction and fantasy.[3]

Fantasy podcasts have been used by businesses as marketing campaigns to increase brand visibility. For instance, the German software company, SAP, produced a podcast entitled Searching for Salaì.[6]

Notable examples

The Two Princes is a popular audio drama style LGBT fantasy podcast.[7][8] Prominent roleplaying style fantasy podcasts, often referred to as "live-play podcasts," include Critical Role and The Adventure Zone.[9][10] Another well-known improvised fantasy podcast is Hello from the Magic Tavern.[11][12] Other fantasy podcasts include Carcerem and Roommate From Hell.[13][14]

For instance, Sword and Laser has been adapted into a book.[17] The Adventure Zone has been adapted into both books and comics.[18] Critical Role has been adapted into books.[9] The Two Princes has been adapted into film.[19] Fantasy magazines have been adapted into podcasts or vice versa. For instance, the Clarkesworld Magazine podcast and the The BCS Audio Vault produced by Beneath Ceaseless Skies Online Magazine.[3][20]
