Based in Tallahassee, FMEA began in 1942 in response to WWII fuel shortages. Together FMEA’s member utilities now serve 3 million Floridians- and are the third largest source of power in the state. These utilities are community-owned and locally managed. FMEA’s membership categories, along with the 33 municipal electric utility members, also include associate member companies, affiliates, and public agencies. FMEA is a trade association; it is governed by its board of directors and its members.

Activities

Member cities’ interests on state and federal issues are represented by FMEA’s legislative team. FMEA also works with the American Public Power Association (APPA) on these issues.

It provides its members with access to news resources, industry statistics, legislative updates, and safety and technical information. It also offers educational training programs, workshops, and online courses to its members.

Events

The annual Energy Connections Conference and Trade Show delivers information to FMEA members about steps they can take to improve their daily operations. The event features workshops on transmission and distribution, customer connections, safety, and lineworker training. A trade show is open to vendors.

The annual Florida Lineman Competition brings together utility lineman teams from across the state to compete against one another.

The FMEA Annual Conference features presentations by industry professionals, workshops, discussions, and more. The conference is designed for utility and city managers and directors, and policy makers from all of Florida’s utilities.

The FMEA Legislative Rally is held annually during Florida’s legislative session to lobby state lawmakers on legislative issues affecting public power communities.
