Gebrüder Weiss GmbH, founded in 1823, is the oldest transport and logistics company worldwide. [3] The group is a private freight forwarding company, which is wholly owned by the Senger-Weiss and Jerie families. The company is based in Lauterach, Vorarlberg.

The company is represented worldwide at 150 locations and has as of 2018 7100 employees. [4] In addition to providing scheduled services and parcel services, Gebrüder Weiss also offers transport.[5]


History of Gebrüder Weiss

In 1823 the Gebrüder Weiss company was founden in Fußach and in 1873 the company relocated the headquarters to Bregenz. [6] Until 1914, Gebrüder Weiss built branches in the Alpine Danube region – among others in Vienna, Venice, Genoa and Trieste, but also in Buchs (Switzerland).

Ferdinand Weiss took over the management in 1921 an subsequently set up branches in Hamburg and Wels. From 1950 onwards, the company expanded in Austria, opening new branches in Innsbruck, Graz and Linz. Western European traffic and air freight organization were established.  

Heidegunde and Paul Senger-Weiss took over the management of the company in 1968 and four years later in 1972 Gebrüder Weiss OHG was transformed into a GmbH. The parcel service “APS Austrian Paket System” was founded in 1988 and was followed by cooperation/franchise agreements with DPD.

In 2006, Gebrüder Weiss opened its largest logistics terminal to date in Maria Lanzendorf near Schwechat.[7]

With 4328 employees, turnover increase by 9 percent to 950 million euros in 2007. In 2008 the “Orange Combi Cargo” was introduced and has been operating daily between Vienna and Bludenz as well as the Vienna-Salzburg route.[8]

In 2010, Gebrüder Weiss acquired a 25 percent stake in the international freight forwarder Wilhelm Diehl from Esslingen (Germany).[9]

In 2011 the company generated sales of more than one billion euros in its 500-year history.[10]

In 2017, Gebrüder Weiss founded its own national organization in the USA with headquarters in Chicago and locations in New York, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas and Los Angeles. [11]
