Gertrude, California

Gertrude (also, String Town) is a former settlement in Madera County, California.[1] It was located alongside the Fresno River near Enterprise Mine,[1] 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Ahwahnee.[2]

Originally String Town, the name was changed to Gertrude when the post office opened.[2] The Gertrude post office operated from 1881 to 1893, from 1896 to 1900, when the service was transferred to Ahwahnee, with a move in 1899.[2] The name honored Gertrude Haley, the town's first postmaster.[2]
