Greek Basketball Super Cup

The Greek Basketball Super Cup or Hellenic Basketball Super Cup is a top-tier level professional basketball national super cup competition in Greece. It was first organized by the Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.) in 1986 only, between the Greek basketball champion and the Greek basketball cup winner. The cup has been revived in 2020 by the Hellenic Basketball Clubs Association (HEBA) using a final-four format.[1][2]

History and format

The Greek Basketball Super Cup was first played in 1986 between Aris, the Greek Basket League champion in the 1985–86 season, and Panathinaikos, the Greek Basketball Cup winner in the 1985–86 season. Aris won the home match 117–85 and the away match 104-88, thereby winning the super cup easily.[3] Aris went on to win both the Greek championship and cup (domestic double) for the next four consecutive seasons (1986–87, 1987–88, 1988–89, 1989–90) and Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.) never held the Greek basketball super cup competition again.

In September 2020, Hellenic Basketball Clubs Association (HEBA) decided to hold its own basketball super cup competition, in which the top four teams from 2019–20 Greek Basketball League compete against each other, with one of them being also the cup winner of the 2019–20 season and another the 2019–20 cup finalist. The competition will be played on a final-four format and single elimination games.[4] Promitheas Patras won the 2020 edition of the Greek super cup on September 24, 2020.[5]
