Hakari (river)

Hakari River (Azerbaijani: Həkəri) is the left tributary of the Araz in Azerbaijan. The river is 128 kilometres (80 mi) long and flows through Qubadli District and Zangilan District.[1] Several populated places are along the river, like Aganli (on the left bank), Alibayli (on the right bank), Mammadbayli (on the left bank) and Yenikend (on the right bank).[2] The elevation difference between the source and mouth is 2,812 metres (9,226 ft).[1] The river's water is used for irrigation and drinking.[1] Fishes like trout and Arctic cisco spawn in this river.[1]

History

Qubadli and Zangilan districts were occupied by Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh war, including the Hakari river and was made part of the Kashatagh Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, referred to as Akari (Armenian: Հակարի. Both of the districts were recaptured by Azerbaijan during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, returning the river to Azerbaijani control.
