Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Dewan

Hazrat Baba Haji Sher Dewan shrine is the first shrine in South Asia.The shrine is located in the village of Chak Haji Sher Dewan (formerly Kothewal) on the Burewala Sahuka Road. It was constructed by Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi and renovated by both the Mughal emperor Jahnagir and Dewan Mool Raj.[4] Being chained at the shrine for three consecutive days and nights is believed to cure mental illnesses.[5] Fariduddin Ganjshakar and Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari were born in the area, and Hazrat Bahuddin Zakariya Multani, Hazrat Syed Jalaluddin Shah Bukhari, Hazrat Usman Marvandi (alias Lal Shahbaz Qalandar), and Sikhism founder Guru Nanak visited the shrine.[6]

There is a well half a kilometer from the shrine which is called Khoi Baba Farid. It is said that Fariduddin Ganjshakar meditated at the well for twelve years, hanging from a kachi tand (raw-yarn rope), and achieved bhagti. The well is still in use.[7]

Rai Chawala took the name Haji Sher Muhammad Dewan when he converted to Islam while being held as a prisoner of war in Madina. His tutor in the faith was Imam Hussain. His father, Raja Mahinpal, was a follower of Buddhism and chief of the Rajpoot Lakkan tribe of Sindh. His mother was from Chunian. His family did not approve of his conversion and he was martyred on Ramadan-ul-Mubarak 27, 131 Hijri, when at prayer.[8][9]
