Background
Before collaborating with Bieber on the song, Maejor Ali had featured him on the single "Lolly" earlier in 2013.[1] Maejor Ali recalled "real harps, guitar players" being brought in for the recording of "Hearbreaker" and stated that those in the studio "tried to create a masterpiece" with the song.[1] He continued, explaining that Bieber and his team "wanted to make this music the most honest as possible" and that "all the conversations in the studio are heard in the song."[1] Maejor Ali, along with co-producers T-Minus and Chef Tone, was responsible for the "strung-out emotion" added to it.[2] Bieber also contributed production to the song.[3]
In the song's description on iTunes, Bieber wrote: "It's a song for people going through a heartbreak -- like I was when I wrote it."[4] The description also included Bieber expressing pride for the song and referencing its connection to his fans; he later posted the description to Twitter.[4][5] The song marked a difference in sound from previous singles by Bieber, with his manager Scooter Braun explaining that "Heatbreaker" and the other tracks from Journals differentiated from his past work as "very R&B-driven, personal songs, not necessarily songs that he was thinking of as radio records," and dubbed Bieber's performance on the song as him "pouring his heart out."[5]
Commercial performance
After "Heartbreaker" topped the iTunes chart in 56 countries worldwide, Bieber tweeted in reference to its success.[6] The track eventually became a chart topper on iTunes in 63 countries.[6] It debuted at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and climbed 64 places to number 13 on the chart the following week despite a lack of airplay, due to sales and streams.[5][7] The track sold 182,000 downloads after being on sale for eight days and lasted for two weeks on the Hot 100.[7] On the UK Singles Chart, "Heartbreaker" entered at number 14.[8]
