Weekend Update

2020-2021 season

The 46th season of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 3, 2020, with host Chris Rock and musical guest Megan Thee Stallion.

On September 15, 2020, it was announced that the entire cast from last season will return, with Ego Nwodim being promoted to repertory status.

The next day brought the announcement of three new cast members: SNL writer/stand-up comic Andrew Dismukes, L.A. Upright Citizens Brigade alum Lauren Holt, and stand-up comedian Punkie Johnson. This makes 20 cast members, the most in SNL history, as well as the largest repertory cast with 15.

It was also confirmed that Jim Carrey (and later Alex Moffat) would portray Joe Biden, taking over from Woody Harrelson, Jason Sudeikis, and John Mulaney in the previous season. Alec Baldwin and Maya Rudolph were confirmed to return in their roles as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, respectively.

Opening Montage

After just two seasons, a new opening intro has been introduced. Like the previous one, it's in black and white and shows the cast both at NBC Studios and around 30 Rockefeller Plaza, with their names appearing in variously colored hand-drawn typography. Some of the cast are also shown wearing masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme music from the previous intro was carried over to this one (with small arrangement changes in the beginning) and the host and musical guest portions, in which they are short video clips, remain the same.

As of the Issa Rae/Justin Bieber episode, the cards for the host and musical guest are now in color, though the Dave Chappelle/Foo Fighters intro was in black and white.

Bumper format

It looks relatively the same as last season, albeit, a few color differences.

Notes

  • SNL staff writer turned cast member Andrew Dismukes is the fourth cast member to be born in the 1990s (he was born in 1995) after Pete Davidson (born 1993), Luke Null (born 1990), and Yang (also born in 1990).[1]
  • McKinnon's return this season officially makes her the show's longest tenured female cast member, surpassing previous female cast members such as Amy Poehler and Vanessa Bayer.[2]
