Hurdon

Hurdon is a suburb of New Plymouth, in the western North Island of New Zealand. It is located to the southwest of the city centre.[1]

According to the 2013 New Zealand census, the "Upper Westown" area, which is largely the same area as the suburb, has a population of 1,578, an increase of 78 people since the 2006 census. There were 744 males and 834 females.[2]

An early settler of the area was Peter Elliot, who arrived on the Amelia Thompson in 1841. He established the first dairy in New Plymouth, which he called Hurdon. A school was established in his barn in 1853.[3]

Education

Frankley School is a coeducational contributing primary (years 1-6) school with a roll of 284 students as of March 2020.[4][5] The school started as Frankley Road School in 1878. A new two-room school replaced it in 1910. The school moved to its current site in 1969.[3]
