About

Jalan Bahar is located at the western part of Singapore , and is in close proximity to Tuas and Lim Chu Kang districts. A large portion of Jalan Bahar's land area is restricted and designated for the Singapore Armed Forces' live firing exercises and the Singapore Civil Defence' Basic Rescue Training exercises.

Primarily a wooded, forested area, the land at Jalan Bahar has been cleared over the years and is left undeveloped till today. Only a few commercial buildings stand here, mainly industrial buildings and educational institutions.

Restricted Area

  • Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) live firing exercises

The SAF holds its live firing exercises periodically at non-residential areas namely near Ama Keng, Bedok Jetty, Hong Kah, Kranji, Jurong, Lentor, Lim Chu Kang, Marsiling, Mandai, Neo Tiew, Jalan Kwok Min, Tuas, Upper, Simpang, Sembawang and Seletar.

  • Singapore Civil Defence' (SCDF) Basic Rescue Training (BRT) exercises

The SCDF conducts its BRT exercises for newly-enlisted full-time Civil Defence National Servicemen (NSF) at its Basic Rescue Training Center (BRTC) here, one of the two SCDF establishments at Jalan Bahar. The other establishment is the former SCDF camp. It is no longer in service today.

Haunted Spots

The northeast tip of Jalan Bahar includes part of the Choa Chu Kang cemetery, a site that is synonymous with many paranormal occurrences i.e. ghosts sightings and bizarre incidents. Brave souls can go on a ghost hunt at the following sites:

  • Choa Chu Kang cemetery for Muslims, Chinese, Hindus, Christians, Bahai, Parsi and Jewish.
  • Jile Memorial Park
  • Cemetery Chapel
  • The Garden of Remembrance Park
  • Ahmadiyya Jama'at Burial Ground

Leisure

There are many bike trails here to choose from. The most popular ones are the routes towards Dragon Kilns, or at Westwood Park.

  • Pottery-making

The Jalan Bahar Clay Studios (JBCS) is where you can go for pottery-making workshops by famed Singapore potters. For other pottery artists, there are studios that come equipped with pottery equipment i.e. electric wheels, pug mill, slab roller etc.

Etymology

In Malay, bahar refers to a large lake or river.[1] A flyover also takes its name from the road.[2]

Current status

Besides the Civil Defence Academy, Pusara Aman Muslim Cemetery as well as the entrance to Nanyang Technological University campus at Nanyang Road, there are few ongoing developments surrounding Jalan Bahar. The road had recently completed its road widening project in late 2016.[3] The purpose of this project was to improve the current traffic situation and to support future developments and economic activities in the West Region.[4]
