Jonathan Lewis (soccer)

Jonathan Jeremy Lewis (born June 4, 1997) is an American soccer player who plays as a winger or forward for Major League Soccer club Colorado Rapids.

Early and personal life

Lewis was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but grew up in Plantation, Florida[3] and attended South Plantation High School.[2]

His mother is from London.[4] He is also of Jamaican descent.[2]

Club career

After playing in the United States with the Chicago Fire academy, Plantation FC,[5] and Kendall SC,[2][6] and in England with the RIASA Academy, Lewis signed a two-year professional contract with Bradford City in July 2015.[7] He had also trained with a number of other English clubs.[4]

He signed on loan for Farsley Celtic in September 2015,[8] making his debut for them the next day.[9]

After two appearances for Farsley Celtic, one in the league and one in the FA Trophy,[10] Lewis left Bradford City in October 2015 by mutual consent, citing homesickness.[11][12]

Upon returning to the United States, he played college soccer with the Akron Zips, winning the 2016 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year award.[2]

He was drafted third overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by New York City FC.[13] Lewis made his professional debut on March 18, 2017, appearing as a 79th-minute substitute in a 1–1 draw with Montreal Impact.[14]

In September 2018 he moved on loan to Louisville City FC.[15]

In May 2019, Lewis was traded to Colorado Rapids.[16] Lewis made his Rapids debut against Real Salt Lake on May 11, 2019, playing 65 minutes.[17] Lewis scored his first two goals for the club in consecutive games, first on May 25 against Columbus Crew SC and then on May 29 against Philadelphia Union.[18]

International career

He is a member of the United States under-20 national team,[19] and was invited to a training camp run by the Jamaican senior team.[2]

Lewis won the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship with United States U20,[20] scoring a goal and assisting another in a 4–1 group stage win against Saint Kitts and Nevis U20.[21]

He made his senior international debut for the United States on January 27, 2019, in a 3-0 friendly win against Panama.[22]

Playing style

He has been compared to Nahki Wells, who also signed for Bradford City after playing with RIASA.[4]
