Joshy Mangalath

Joshy Mangalath is a National Award Winning Indian film screenwriter who made his debut with the feature film Ottaal for which he got the National award for the Best Screenplay (adapted).[1] In 2015, he received the National Film Award for Best Screenplay (adapted) for the 2014 Malayalam film Ottaal, at the 62nd National Film Awards.[2]

Early life

He was born in Attingal, Kerala, as the son of Sudheendran and Lillykutty. Joshy's school education was in Nattakom Government Model high school at Kottayam District, Kerala. After his schools, he studied at Changanacherry S.B College. He later pursued a diploma in Electronics from Calicut D.G.E & T centre. He got graduation in B.B.A, and then he did post-graduation M.B.A in human resources management (Edexcel University U.K). From his early childhood itself, he was introduced to the world of classic novels, short stories, poems, and essays brought home by his father. He was instrumental in teaching the love for books in him. This implanted the seed of reading and writing in his soul. He started writing short stories and articles from his schooling years, and at present. His enthusiasm for reading plays of master dramatists like Omcheri, N. Krishnapilla, Naredraprasad, and Thoppil Bhasi, (famous playwrights) among others instilled him for the love of scripting plays. His short stories have been published in leading Malayalam journals. Apart from writing, he used to sing songs, conduct many stage programs and television channel programmes. His songs are available on YouTube as 'Joshy Mangalath Songs'.

Career

Joshy started his career as HR & Admin Manager in a US based company Dubai. Currently settled at Kerela. Ottaal is his first screenplay realized as film, which won him National Award. . Ottaal (A wicker basket for catching fish) story is based on the world famous Russian writer Anton Chekhov's short story 'Vanka'. 'Vanka' is a tale of an orphan boy who works under a cobbler and the hardships he endures. It was film Director Jayaraj who has asked Joshy to do a Screenplay based on Vanka.[3] The film made history, becoming the first-ever Malayalam movie to have swept all the top awards in the 20-years history of the International Film Festival of Kerala.
