Lahore School of Economics

The Lahore School of Economics (LSE) is an independent research university based in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan established in 1993 and chartered by the government in January 1997. It has currently 200 faculty members and over 3,000 students studying undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs.[1][2]

History

The Lahore School was founded by Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, a McGill trained economist, who served as the deputy chair of the influential Planning Commission.

Academics

The Lahore School's academic programmes encompass Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Environmental Sciences and Media Studies, Art and Design. The School offers both Graduate and Undergraduate programmes within specialized faculties, departments and research centres.

The Lahore School of Economics consists of two distinctive institutes, the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, which carries out research and training in international development, and the Centre for Research in Economics and Business, which publishes the Lahore Journal of Economics as well as the Lahore Journal of Business.[3]

LSE is considered to be one of the best business schools in Pakistan, and its graduates are higher in demand in multinational companies and banking sector. The Lahore School of Economics ranked 2nd in the Pakistani Higher Education Commission's Business category of higher education institutes.It has a ranking of 91 in overall universities of the country[4]

Campus

The Lahore School has two campuses: the Main campus and the City campus. The Main campus is located on the intersection of DHA Phase VI Main Boulevard and Burki Road, spread over 50 acres (200,000 m2) and the city campus is located in Gulberg 3.

Faculties and programs of instruction

The Lahore School of Economics is split into eight faculties consisting in total of 130 permanent faculty members.[5]

Centre for Research in Economics & Business

The LSE's Centre for Research in Economics and Business, known as CREB, undertakes research which has been recognised nationally and internationally. The CREB is closely associated with various governmental and non-governmental research wings and think tanks. The university also conducts a student exchange program with Bahcesehir University Turkey, and other universities.

Campus life and Societies

The Lahore School's Main campus hosts a variety of facilities which cater to the student body. The campus is equipped with two libraries and five computer labs. The university also houses a basketball court, a cricket ground and a football field. The university's media centre houses a computer lab, equipped with Apple Macs. The school has a number of societies including dramatics, adventure and a debating society. The debating society is one of the best in the Punjab. The campus houses a girls hostel and mess as well. Two cafeterias and three smaller canteen are on campus with a variety of food and beverages.
