Land border crossings of Pakistan

Pakistan borders four countries, namely Afghanistan, China, India & Iran and has multiple entry and exit ports which can be crossed by both citizens as well as foreigners, through various means of transport.

There are six official border crossings and trade terminals between Afghanistan and Pakistan

  • Angur Adda, between Wana and Ghazni, is a border crossing used only for border trade. Previously, it could not be made operational due to security concerns.[1]
  • Ghulam Khan, Miramshah and Khost, which is mainly used for border trade, but can be used by tourists on one specfic day of the week.[2]
  • Torkham, between Peshawar and Jalalabad, is a major border crossing station between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pedestrian crossings are allowed on four days of the week.[3]
  • Kharlachi, on July 2020 Pakistan announced reopening of Kharlachi border crossing with Afghanistan for bilateral border trade.[4]
  • Chaman, between Quetta and Kandahar, is border crossing station which is used for both border trade and border crossings.[5]
  • Badini Trade Terminal, was inaugurated on September 2020 by the Chief Minister of Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan, which allowed for bilateral border trade.[6]

There are also numerous of unofficial and illegal border crossings used by locals, smugglers and terrorists however the Pakistani government is trying to stop cross-border infiltration by construction of the Afghanistan–Pakistan barrier.

Rail

  • There are currently no operational railway crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Khyber Pass Railway which connects Pakistan with Afghanistan was suspended due to security problems and the 2006 monsoon season rains in the Khyber Pass washed away significant sections of the railway. The track as of today is closed for all type's of railway traffic.
  • In June 2019 Pakistan minister for railway Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said that Pakistan Railways was planning to lay new railway track from Peshawar to Jalalabad. Durning talking to media persons he also said pakistan railways was also planning to lay railway track from Chaman to Qandahar which would connect Pakistan and Afghanistan and boost business activities.[7]

  • A border crossing near Mustagh Pass has been proposed as an alternative CPEC route in order to shorten the route to China, which would also connect AJ&K.[8][9]
