List of Storm Prediction Center extremely critical days

An extremely critical fire weather event is the greatest threat level issued by the NWS Storm Prediction Center (SPC) for wildfire events in the United States. Extremely critical areas are issued only several times a year when forecasters at the SPC are confident of extremely dangerous wildfire conditions on a given day. These are typically reserved for the most extreme events.[1]

Progression of a well-anticipated extremely critical event across the Central Plains on March 6, 2017. This event produced wildfires that burned 1,200,000 acres of land, and killed seven people.

Fire weather products have been issued by the Storm Prediction Center since 1998;[2] however, there is very little online documentation for days before 2002 due to the lack of SPC archives.[3] Therefore, it is likely that there were additional extremely critical days with no online documentation.

Notes

  1. All values include events that took place outside the extremely critical area. Fatality totals encompass all fire-related events and only include deaths that occurred on the respective extremely critical days, unless otherwise noted.
  2. Number of acres burned for entire event.
  3. The Red Flag Threat Index (RFTI) is a fire weather index that was developed in 2011, with values from 0-10 that rates the climatological rarity of combined relative humidity and wind combinations. Historically Critical values of 9 or 10 can only be reached when either relative humidity or wind speed exceed a ten year observational data set.
  4. This event is considered to be the deadliest extremely critical day, due to the fact that all eighty-five fatalities associated with the event occurred on November 8. The fatality totals for events such as the October 2007 California wildfires are not applicable, as not all fatalities associated with the events occurred on the respective extremely critical days. In addition, the fatalities associated with the wildfires on October 8, 2017 are also excluded, as the SPC only predicted critical fire conditions.
  5. An exact daily breakdown of fatalities is not available. It is known that 25 people died in wildfires during a period from September 7 to the 13.
