It has been used for cricket matches since 1914 and has been used as a first-class cricket venue by Northern Districts since 1956 when the side were admitted into the Plunket Shield. The ground is located close to the centre of Hamilton, New Zealand's fifth largest city. It has a capacity of 10,000 and is named after a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Richard Seddon.[1]

The ground was first used for international cricket in 1981 when a One Day International (ODI) between New Zealand and India was played. The first Test match on the ground was played in February 1991 between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and the first Twenty20 International (T20I) was played in December 2008 with West Indies the opposition.[1] The first Women's ODI was held on the ground in 1982 and it remains in use as an international venue for both New Zealand's men's and women's sides. A number of international matches not involving New Zealand teams have been played on the ground, and it hosted three ODI matches during the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer") refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[2] This list details the five-wicket hauls taken in international cricket at Seddon Park.

The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in an international match at Seddon Park was Sri Lanka's Rumesh Ratnayake took five wickets for 77 runs (5/77) during the ground's first Test match in 1991. The best Test match bowling figures in an innings on the ground are the 7/27 taken by Chris Cairns for New Zealand against West Indies in December 1999. The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI on the ground was New Zealand's Rachel Pullar, who took 5/7 in 1999 against South Africa Women.
