Ten acts (Jody Watley, The System, Gregory Hines, Herb Alpert, Atlantic Starr, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Alexander O'Neal, The Force M.D.'s, Siedah Garrett, and LL Cool J) received their first number-one singles on the chart. Additionally, Angela Winbush received her first number one single as a solo artist, having previously reached number one twice with her former group René & Angela, while Jody Watley had previously reached the apex of the chart with her group Shalamar. The O'Jays also returned to number one after a nine-year hiatus with their single "Lovin' You". Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson both reached number one with three chart-toppers, with Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, and Stephanie Mills having two number-one hits during the year.

Chart history

Luther Vandross (pictured left with Diana Ross, 2000) had two chart-topping singles during the year. The first, "Stop to Love", was named the R&B single of the year.
Janet Jackson had three number-ones during 1987: "Control", "Let's Wait Awhile", and "The Pleasure Principle".
Michael Jackson had three chart toppers during the year: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", and "The Way You Make Me Feel".
