M-9 motorway (Pakistan)

The M-9 (موٹروے 9) is a 136-km long 6-lane motorway connecting the cities of Hyderabad and Karachi in the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is a part of Pakistan's Motorways Network. M-9 is an upgrade of the existing Karachi-Hyderabad Super Highway by adding an extra lane on each side, along with a complete re-surfacing of the road. The re-construction of M-9 motorway via FWO is below the international standards.[1]

A groundbreaking ceremony of The M-9 Motorway was held on 11 March 2015 with planned a completion date of August 2017; however, a deadline for M-9 had slipped and the new inauguration was held in April 2018.

The motorway was constructed by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and Think Transportation was the Traffic Consultant for the motorway. Construction begun in September 2015 and completed in April 2018. The motorway is 136 km and include 3 lanes on either side. The project will reduce the traveling time between Karachi and Hyderabad. The motorway on completion will consist of:

  • 136 km 6 Lane facility.
  • 275 km 2x Lane Service Road on either sides.
  • 8 Interchanges.
  • Karachi and Hyderabad Toll Plazas into 24 lane facilities.
  • Introduce Weigh Stations on new interchanges to check overloading
  • Construction of 2 Service Areas.
  • Construction of 2 Trauma Centers.

M-9 Motorway is an upgrade of previously known super highway and the re-construction quality is very poor and way below the international standards.[2]

M-9 Lacks following features:

  1. Quality of Pavement is low and in the past incident of unevenness of road surface happens for the M-9 Motorway.[3]
  2. Service areas and amenities are not maintained and does not exists accordingly.
  3. Service roads along the motorway are missing which enables the local traffic to join motorway at any point. Which includes traffic entering and exiting from the gas stations, hotels, etc.
  4. Proper and complete fence along the motorway are missing which enables the pedestrians to jay walk or cross the motorway on feet.
  5. Lane marking using basic paint job was done, however proper cat eyes or lane marking reflectors were not installed.
