Political career

His works as the Irrigation Minister of Karnataka gave a new lease of life of various stalled irrigation projects across Karnataka. Further they have earned him different tags, "Waterman of Karnataka", "Aadhunika Bhagiratha" etc. As the irrigation minister, he worked on the problem of inter-state river water disputes.

Notable works

Cauvery Water Allocation

As the Water Resources Minister MB Patil steered Karnataka's efforts in the Supreme Court to get additional 14.75 tmc ft of cauvery water to Karnataka, this brought a big relief to the drinking water problem in Bengaluru.[6]

Lake-filling Projects

Lakes in Vijayapura that once served as a source of drinking water and as a major source for the sustainability of agriculture were rejuvenated by bringing water through a 60 kilometers pipeline from Krishna river, under M B Patil's regime. Under his leadership, the irrigation dept. of Karnataka rejuvenated over 1,300 lakes across the State.

Rejuvenation of Historical Bawdis (Tanks/Stepwells)

Vijayapura has around 22 Bawdis/Stepwells constructed during Adil-Shahi period. M.B.Patil showed a keen interest in rejuvenating these historical Bawdis during his regime as the District In-charge Minister of Vijayapura. Today due to his honest efforts these age old Bawdis which were in pathetic condition are now brimming with clean water & serving as the vital sources of drinking water in the region. For instance, Taj Bawdi is catering to the drinking water needs of around 5 lakh people.

Speeding-up of Upper Bhadra Project Implementation

Upper Bhadra Project is a major lift irrigation scheme under implementation in the central region of Karnataka State. It envisages to irrigate an extent of 2,25,515 hectares by micro irrigation in drought-prone districts of Chikmagaluru, Chitradurga, Tumkur and Davanagere and to fill up 367 tanks coming under the drought prone taluks of the three district through Chitradurga branch Canal and Tumkur branch canal. Soon after taking up Water Resource Dept., M B Patil ensured the formation of Visvesvaraya Jal Nigam Limited (VJNL) for the effective implementation various life irrigation projects in the State. His honest efforts have born fruits today as the Tunga water is already being lifted to the canals of Upper Bhadra Project.

25 per cent Reservation to Women in Police Jobs

Under the leadership of M B Patil, the Karnataka State Police Dept. has brought in a reformation to reserve 25 per cent of jobs in 9 posts to women to increase their strength in police forces. [7]
