Makran (port ship)

Makran (port ship), (Persian: ناوبندر مکران) is the first port ship of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was unveiled on 13 January 2021. This port ship is considered as the largest military vessel in the country/Middle-East, and is capable to carry 5 helicopters, and in the initial phase, it can considerably increase its support capacity for remote naval expeditions in the high-seas.[1][2][3]

This port ship is supposed to be placed at sea and will not return to the port till it requires heavy repairs; the location of Makran is going to be determined based on Islamic Republic of Iran's offshore sovereignty strategies in the high seas. Its task/purpose is to support the fleet-groups in remote waters, especially in the North Indian Ocean, the Bab-el-Mandeb and the Red Sea. In addition to two missile container launch platforms, 6 positions of defensive artillery, diverse electronic warfare systems which have been observed on naval warships, are installed on the top of the mast mounted on this Iranian-made port ship, which are considered to have significance in today's modern battlefield.[4][5][6][7]

Makran

Makran (Persian: مکران‎), mentioned in some sources as Mecran and Mokrān, is the coastal region of Baluchistan. Makran is a semi-desert coastal strip which is located in Balochistan, in the country of Pakistan and Islamic republic of Iran, along the coast of the Gulf of Oman.

Port ships works as a mobile naval-base, and those are portions of the key infrastructure that supports expanded forces/equipment at sea.[8]

Specifications

In appearance, the major change in the "Makran port ship" in comparison to the base-tanker is related to the addition of a big runway landing and take-off in the front half of the deck with a length of approximately eighty (to eighty-five) meters and a width equal to the width of the hull. The mentioned wide deck lets it to easily deploy five helicopters simultaneously, that Includes the combination of two Bell-212 helicopters, two Sea-King helicopters and a RH-53D (C Stallion) helicopter.[9][10][11]

As well as the signal recognition system or ESM made by the Islamic Republic of Iran defense industry, X-band marine radars and marine telecommunication systems are also able to be detected on the Makran. The long-range missiles of Qadir with a range of 300 kilometers and Abu-Mahdi missiles whose range is more than one thousand km, are considered to be the main options which can be designed for anti-ship missiles in this ship.[12][13][14]

Four speedboats with a capacity of twelve people which are equipped with 11-barrel (107 mm) rocket-launcher, and 4 submarines which are related to the specific operations of Sabah-15 along with the capacity of 150 special operations forces are from other capabilities of "Makran port ship". Moreover, diverse unmanned aerial vehicles have the capability in order to do operations from Makran port ship, among of them are "the Pelican vertical Take-off and Landing vertical UAV with a range of 1200 km, that is equipped with electro-optical systems and has the capability to perform reconnaissance, targeting and air-monitoring operations on the surrounding environment at different distances.[15][16]
