History

The mosque was built in the 18th century. During the Soviet era the building of the mosque was used as a warehouse. After Azerbaijan gained independence in 1991 the mosque once again became a place of worship.[1] In 1993 as a result of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War the territory of the Qubadli District, including Məmər village was captured by Armenian forces.

In 2001, the Mamar Mosque was declared an "architectural monument of local importance" by the Cabinet of Azerbaijan.[2]

2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war

On 30 October 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured 9 villages of the Jabrayil, Zangilan and Qubadli districts, including Mamar.[3]

Azerbaijan's presidential aide Hikmat Hajiyev posted footage of the mosque and wrote on Twitter that during Armenia's occupation, the mosque was "transformed into a pigsty", calling on UNESCO, ICESCO, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to condemn and take action against Armenia.[4][5] Iranian-French photojournalist Reza Deghati visited the mosque and took photos showing that the building was turned into an animal stable.[6] The General Secretariat of the OIC expressed concern about the "condition of historical monuments in and around Nagorno-Karabakh that are an integral part of Islamic heritage", criticizing the "misappropriation and falsification of history" and the "deliberate destruction and looting of material and spiritual artifacts" with regard to the destroyed Mamar Mosque.[7]
