History

The area was settled by Reverend J.S Wilshire in 1853. The family established a farm before being followed by other settlers. It wasn't until after the Civil War, when Thomas W. Hollingworth established a flour mill, that the community became organized. The town was initially named Marysville in honor of Thomas' wife, however when a post office was applied for, it was discovered that a Marysville already existed, and so the community was renamed Marystown.[2][3][4]

The post office was in operation from 1874 to 1901. By 1879, the population was at 100, and the community featured a cotton gin, flour mill, gristmill, a general store and two grocery stores. There was also a school and two churches, one of which was built by Hollingworth himself. When the railroad was constructed in 1881, it bypassed Marystown causing residents to relocate to the nearby town of Burleson. The community ceased to exist in an organized form around 1901, when the school had 117 students being taught by two teachers.[5][6]
