Medina Township, Michigan

Medina Township is a civil township of Lenawee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,227 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 47.6 square miles (123 km2), of which 47.6 square miles (123 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.15%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,227 people, 451 households, and 357 families residing in the township. The population density was 25.8 per square mile (10.0/km2). There were 484 housing units at an average density of 10.2 per square mile (3.9/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.04% White, 0.49% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.71% of the population.

There were 451 households, out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 116.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $40,347, and the median income for a family was $44,519. Males had a median income of $31,493 versus $23,889 for females. The per capita income for the township was $18,008. About 4.8% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.

Communities

Medina

Medina is an unincorporated community in the northeastern corner of the township. It was first settled in 1812 and was platted in 1837. Both the township and the village are named after Medina, New York.

Canandaigua

Canandaigua is an unincorporated community in the northeastern corner of the township, just southeast of Medina. It was original a Potawotamie village until the first white settlers arrived in the 1830s, naming the settlement after Canandaigua, New York. The village was platted in 1835. A post office, named Medina after the nearby village and the township opened in 1837. The name was changed to Canandaigua in 1850 until it closed in 1911.
