Molly Gray

Molly Gray (born 1984) is an American attorney and politician from the state of Vermont. A member of the Democratic Party, she became the 82nd and current lieutenant governor of Vermont in 2021. She had previously served as an assistant attorney general for Vermont from 2018 to 2021.

Early life and education

Gray is from Newbury, Vermont.[2] Her father, Bob Gray, competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics and 1972 Winter Olympics as a cross-country skier.[3] Her mother, Kim Mumford, was an alpine skier who did not qualify for the Olympics due to an injury.[3] Her uncle, William B. Gray, was a United States Attorney.[4] Bob and Kim Gray raised Molly and her two siblings on a 225-acre (91 ha) farm.[2]

Gray attended the University of Vermont, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2006, and competed for the Vermont Catamounts in cross-country skiing.[3][5] Gray earned a Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School in 2014.[6] She earned a Master of Laws in International Law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.[7]

Career

In college, Gray served as an intern for Patrick Leahy's office in Vermont and then worked on Peter Welch's 2006 campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives.[4] She worked in Welch's office after he was elected and also worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross.[5]

After graduating from law school, Gray clerked for Peter W. Hall of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She passed the bar exam in Vermont in February 2017 and worked for the International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers. In August 2018, she became an assistant attorney general in Vermont's criminal division.[7]

2020 Vermont Lieutenant Governor election

In 2020, Gray opted to run for lieutenant governor.[7] Gray defeated Tim Ashe and Debbie Ingram in the Democratic Party primary election on August 11, 2020[8] On November 3, 2020, Gray defeated Republican Scott Milne in the general election, receiving 52% of the vote.[9] She was sworn into office on January 7, 2021.[10]
